Rebuilding a 4 speed Sturmey Archer hub?

I'm tempted to Rebuilding my 4 speed Sturmey Archer FM hub on my Rudge but I've never done it before. Is it easy enough? Or will it be complicated and not worth it? It works fine but im rebuilding the rest of the bike with all new bearings and grease so thought it would be nice to do the hub too. Any advice would be appreciated.

If it works don't fix it. You'll end up stripping it down and putting it back together without the parts that sprang out or rolled away and it won't work any better. Just keep it oiled and the cable adjusted.

Can you regrease the bearings without a full rebuild? I don't know the FM hub.

They weren't designed for grease, just a few drops of oil every now and then. Grease can clog them up.

As far as in know they last forever or until you need to mend it with a new one.

I've only experience with the aw hub but I should imagine the fw would be essentialy very similar (you'll obviously can get all the information on the net) The outer coned wheel bearings and centre main bearing will be loose balls and greased... Then a teaspoon of oil through the port- mine ran really rough before I took it apart cleaned & regreased it (although it changed perfectly)

Rebuilt their three and five speed hubs a few times, just take your time. Get hold of a metal lid that has a magnet attached, it'll capture any loose parts that do fall out..
