Our old satnav's given up the ghost, and in truth google maps does a better job anyway, but it would probably be better not to have the phone sliding around on the passenger seat. Does anyone have a dashboard-mounted holder, or know anything about them? There seem to be loads on ebay, but I don't know one from another, or what to look for. Any advice appreciated.

I've got two vent ones. One is sprung and the other magnetic for which you need to put a metal disc somewhere on the back of the phone or between phone and case or in my case, on the battery with the phone back cover over it as it fits. The obvious disadvantage of a vent one is that you lose most of the vent and you can damage the fins but in both my cases, the vent is at the ideal height.

I've used others but they either obscure vision somewhere or regularly fall off as the suction fails, leaving phone and holder in the footwell. Overall the magnetic one is the easiest to use and because there's no chance of ripping it out the vent when removing your phone, the least damaging to the vent fins. The vent also keeps the phone cool as it gets quite hot being constantly on display and navigating. Get a usb cable and 12v adaptor too and tun on 'OK Google' no need to touch the phone then.

Vent one here, but it can 'fall' off the vent - grr. It's magnetic, so I just have the plate in the flap of the phone case. I could easily stop it coming off with a tiny bit of double sided tape, but I'm too lazy

Just put it in a front cupholder. The echo will help you hear its voice prompts and you should be looking at the road instead of a map anyway. If you want to use the touchscreen, then park.

Late reply, sorry. I tried the vent ones and they kept slipping off the vent. Also the spring loaded cradles can be very awkward, I ended up pushing the power and volume buttons by mistake.

Magnetic ones are fab, make sure you thoroughly degrease and have a flat surface to stick them on both your dash and the phone. And make sure it's not a hot day when you do it, I stuck mine on and lazily didn't wait 24 hours, so weight of the phone and the sun caused the magnet to slide down. User error though. I struggled to find a flat spot on mine where visibility was good, but eventually had to close over one of the vents and stick it to that

Maps absolutely hammer your phone's battery, and the satellite pickup isn't as good as a dedicated satnav. You can get a decent one for £60-70, which is worth it IME.

I've found the phone meets my occasional needs very well, and I plug it into the 12v so it actually ends a journey perkier than it started.
