Dario argento's
Profondo rosso
(Deep red)
A masterpiece.
Even has subtext.
Am usually resistant to such analyses but some have suggested that it is also about the buried italian memory of fascism. And they may have a point.
May also change/finesse your possibly idealised impressions of italians and family - argento's family background was i think rather problematical.
Oh and it is seriously scary.
I know one of the turin locations. Had a weird feeling about the somewhat truncated square. Later learned that it had been the gestapo hq, which maybe accounted for its somewhat neglected appearance. There's a lot of recent history italians would rather not look at.
If i'm making it sound a bit heavy/impenetrable/pretentious it stars david hemmings.
First saw it in italy in 81, more recently on a great vid from my local library with 2 separate cuts.
English sountrack and subs available i stress
Trailer, without spoilers, unless you are very clever.
Even features a christmas tree.
