I want something reasonably waterproof for these summer showers that's a snug fit and doesn't flap in the wind or balloon out, is thin enough to be folded and kept in a jersey pocket and costs around £50-£60. I've looked at Wiggle, CRC, Parker and Ribble and there's plenty out there but I need recommendations. It doesn't necessarily need to be transparent.

£6.99 for an Aldi mtb-style trail jacket last September. Folds & zips into itself & fits into into pocket. Very waterproof.

They do their winter cycling gear in late summer so look out.

Just below that price @£40 IIRC correctly is the Montane Featherlite Velo. Its a really good fit for me and is really breathable. Its nice a small/ light too I keep mine in my pocket. Its not 100% waterproof ( its marketed weather resistant) but I find it perfect for the summer showers and the odd time when I've wanted to stay really warm/dry I've wore a Gilet too. I've more waterproof jackets but because of its breath ability and size its my choice

+1 for this.

It's packs to a tiny ball and has a velcro strap so you can attach it to your seat and have it dangling there if you don't have a saddle bag. If you do have a reasonable size saddle back (I've got the Topeak Aero Wedge Large) then it'll fit in it along with a load of other stuff too.

If that jacket does all that PBK claim (waterproof, breathable and windproof) then it's an effing good jacket for that price. Bite their hands off.

But my own feeling is that I doubt it can do all of that. I'd love to be proven wrong (and perhaps moggsy can do just that!) but my understanding is that any material that can effectively do it all is going to be somewhat more expensive.

The montane featherlite is a good packable windproof, good breathability but not what you'd call waterproof in prolonged or heavy rain. For me though, it does the job adequately. A genuine waterproof is normally going to be too warm for cycling, unless you're spending around/over the £100 mark (again imo).

At that £50-£60 range, I think you'll be having to find a balance of breathable and waterproof that works for you. And that depends on how energetic a cyclist you are, how much you ride in the pouring rain, and how you feel about getting wet! So that can be trial and error.

So if you tend to work up a sweat, and really need a genuine waterproof then I'd up that budget a look at eVent fabric jackets. Wiggle do their own dhb one that gets good reviews but I personally can't comment, not having one.

For me, I rarely ride in pouring rain but should it happen, I just accept that I'll get wet (worse things in life can happen!) and equally accept the limitations of the Montane. It doesn't happen often enough, or bother me sufficiently, to buy anything more effective.

That Montane featherlite looks as if it might do the job; I'm never going to set off in heavy rain or when heavy rain threatens. I just need something compact to stuff in a jersey pocket when the weather looks less than reliable, I'm going to be a long way from base or it might get chilly on the way home. Yesterday was a case in point, it drizzled on and off so I wore my old Freestyle Goretex jacket that has given me over 15 stirling years of MTB use and is filthy, patched and stiff having been proofed with Thompson's Waterseal! It does the job and still breathes but it's cut for MTBing and billows out at speed.

The Montane jacket is rain repellent Pertex and I already have a Pertex walking windproof, which I like very much but it has lost its repellency and is also cut very baggy and flaps a lot.

I was looking at that jacket this lunchtime for my Otztaler ride - looks small and neat

You can reproof pertex, with varying degrees of success. Well, I guess technically it's not so much reproofing as adding a beading layer... or some such. Thing is, people have washed them in Nikwax and given them some added life!

But, yes, they can be flappy. Obviously, a lot depends on your own shape & size and how that relates to the cut of the jacket itself but I find mine can ride up and flap a bit across the shoulders.

Did you know that Pertex has existed for many years as the material for typewriter ribbons?
