Our youngest brilliantly suggested getting a sledge now, before the winter kicks in, but I've no idea what to get. Don't want anything Swiss for £140...just want something basic but reasonably robust, for kids & adults to muck around on for a few hours this winter. Anyone have any suggestions?

Join the Police, and get yourself into the riot squad, I gather the big rectangular shields work well.

I reckon you're best getting a cheapy moulded plastic thing. There's no guarantee that we'll actually get decent snow, and if we do, the fun will wear off relatively quickly. Here in York, there are a couple of hardware stores that sell them, so there's a place to start looking.

LGV inner tube? Inflatable dinghy?

+1 for the inner tube, I we used one of those large, fake tyre inflatable things last Year, out-accelerated all the "proper" sledges and the landing wasn't quite as bone-jarring after getting big air

(Yes, I know I'm nearly 40 but what the hell...)

A foam mattress in a heavy duty polythene bag, such as a survival bag. Best sledge we ever had, can take up to 4 people at a time!!

Tea tray or an industrial gauge plastic bag

Thanks all. Some excellent suggestions, but when all's said & done, it's clear that I need to join the Police.

The one advantage of the Swiss 'Davos' sled is that if you give your son the sled this winter he will be still using it with his kids.

My brother and I had matching Davos sleds as Christmas presents in 1970. They still get used most years.

I tried one of those wooden jobbies a friend had last year, but I had more fun on the plastic tray for a fiver from my local hardware shop.
