Hi all

Had my first outing with clipless pedals yesterday and it didn't go too well

I have shimano m520 pedals and some aldi MTB type shoes

About 2 miles into the ride I needed to unclip at a set of lights but my left foot was stuck. Luckily my right came out so I didn't fall.

Anyway after pulling over my left foot still wouldn't unclip. I had to take the shoe off and rotate the 360 degrees on the pedal a few times. It looked as if the cleat got stuck on part of the shoe which didn't allow it to release..

So I'm looking for a new pair of shoes. I'm not sure if I'll like clipless yet so don't want to spend a lot

Anyone got any suggestions (apart from aldi? )

Sports Direct do some Muddy Fox mountain bike SPD shoes which are reasonably cheap. I have been using a pair for the last 12 months and they have been fine, they are comfortable and a good fit. I think I paid about £25 for them and have no complaints. They have lasted longer than the Shimano shoes I was using before them.
These are the ones I bought, looks like they have dropped the price.

Did you use the screws that hold the cleat plate in that came with the shoes? these are made of very soft alloy and not really up to the job .I have had the same problem using them and was fine once i swapped to the screws that came with the cleats.

I have just bought my 2nd pair of SPD shoes having used the muddy fox ones for 2 years. Just like you i bought them as they were cheap and i figured i wouldn't be wasting too much money if clipless wasn't for me.
I have a pair of size 11's .... If the right size PM me :-)

I found the sports direct ones a bit flexibile but ok as a starter shoe, gave a pair away on here as i have more cycle shoes than normal shoes (shhhh !)

I have no Idea what these are like yet http://www.exustar.co.uk/exustar-e-sm102-mtb-shoes-236-p.asp but found them while looking for a new pair for myself so just placed an order.
I guess I will see for myself what they are like in a few days

Did you figure out what went wrong with the Aldi shoes? I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago as spares. I test rode them once and they seemed fine, compared to the Specialized Tahoe shoes I've been wearing every day for the last two years. I like that on both the Tahoe and the Aldi shoes, the toes are flexible so you can walk easily in them. Those Muddyfox ones look stiff in the toes.

Update on the Exustar Shoes I ordered on Monday night.
They arrived this morning and From first impressions they look great. Very stiff sole and a good fit.(I take a size 8 and ordered the 43, they feel comfortable. Not too wide). Build quality seems good but time will be the real test of that.
Overall they seem like a good shoe for £29.99 inc delivery. Although on looking at the website today they seem to have put the price up to £39.99. Now I have seen them in the flesh so to speak I think I would have been happy to pay the higher price.

I have the shimano rt32 road touring shoes, they are about £50 very comfy, though be warned they come up small, I'm a size 8 but I wear a 9 and they are a good fit

Amongst others I have a pair of Shimano M088 SPD's which I use on a couple of my bikes with Shimano M520 pedals.

They're great, comfy (they come in standard and wide fit), very robust, decent in wet weather & dry fairly quickly. I've used them during winter with a pair of overshoes and importantly I've never had any problems clipping in or out with them.
