This is the spec of the pc, it is running vista which will become unsupported soon. This pc was not successful with a windows 10 upgrade like the laptop. Maybe the spec is not up to it.

So what are my options?

It looks more than capable of running a lighter version of Linux such as Kubuntu or Xubuntu. I find that although these are based on Ubuntu they are a little less power hungry than Ubuntu Unity.

There's also an OS called Remix that I've heard good things about but not had a chance to try yet.

I doubt the machine is not up to running Windows 10. I had an old PC (originally Windows 7) that had, from memory, similar specs to this. Upgrading it to Windows 10 failed via the automatic MS process so I wiped it completely, re-installed Windows 7 from the original disk and ran the upgrade with no problem. I guessed some software/drivers installed since the original set-up had caused problems.

My daughter uses it for homework, YouTube, and it is running well with Win10.

+1 for Lubuntu. My old laptop running Lubuntu is faster than my new one running Windows 10, even though it's only got a quarter of the memory.

The only downside with Linux is that connecting through a USB modem takes a lot of setting up and a lot of know-how. If you've got a wireless or ethernet connection then it's fine.

Tahrpup ( http://puppylinux.org/wikka/tahrpup ) is even faster and has all the essentials. The only problem is that the default interface looks like it's been designed by a 9-year-old girl with cute puppies and pretty colours everywhere.

But on the plus side, once you've got it working, Debian-based operating systems (including most of the -buntus) rarely screw up your settings without huge warnings first. I started using Linux after a disagreement with Windows 95 or 98 about a modem (it thought it was a mouse and wouldn't be told otherwise) and the basic concepts are still similar (harking back to the 1970s I think) even as they've modernised.
