Any recommendations for an XL helmet for road use. Ideally one that doesn’t make me look like an extra from Super Mario…

Most brands L/XL go up to 62cm. Some are larger. Currently using ( and need to replace) a Met Crossover, which goes up to 64.

Its entirely dependent upon the topography of your head.

I have a 63cm bonce. LBS is a specialised stockist - I recently bought what the label tells me is an "Align II" in xl, which whilst rated at 59-62, fits me with room to spare.

But as @Drago implies, trying them on is everything.

Was in the city today, but Spider-Man made me late for work in the morning, and made me miss my train on the way home.

So didn’t get a chance to go near bike shop.

Mail ordered the same helmet that I had before. Should fit.
Except I have just realised it’s a “new version”.

Agree with the comments here. My head is 66cm and long and narrow. That's a real challenge because, even when in the past helmets of that size were made, they often tended to be too round. In order to be allowed to ride time trials, I'm currently using one where the fit isn't great. The Giro Syntax MIPS sounds possible and I may try one, but I'll still be lucky if it fits (NB definitely the MIPs one - the regular Syntax doesn't seem to be made in XL).

When I first started to encounter helmet requirements to take part in cycling activities, it took my LBS about ten years to find something that fitted. That's no longer made.

I have encountered people with up to 68cm who posted looking for advice.

New helmet arrived today. Apparently it’s the New, Improved, infinitely better, Mk2, redesigned model.

The only difference I can see is that it’s red and the old one was black.

Fits fine though…

If someone is looking at this in the future, I have a big, wide head. I seem to get on best with Specialized helmets.

Might be a daft suggestion, but could you reshape one slightly using hot air, like a hairdryer? It's a polystyrene foam with a plastic shell after all. You'd have to be careful not to melt the foam, but if it was on your bonce at the time that wouldn't be an issue because you'd burn your noggin before that.

@Accy did that with his head and now look at him

I don't think so. It would be bound to undermine the structure of the helmet and therefore any benefit that it might be able to offer.

My club did once offer to hold me upside down with my head in a vat of molten polystyrene.
