Hi all,

Thinking of replacing all my brake and gear cables and also the outers on my SRAM equipped Boardman CX commuter/winter steed. Not desperately needed, but have recently upgraded the brakes and the gearing is clunky so I'm going to see if better quality cables improves the all round performace.

I'm also going to be ditching the top levers.

I'm presuming you get what you pay for, or are they mostly similar quality?
I think they are jagwire at the moment... well the outers are anyway - should I stick with these or are there other manufacturers I should be investigating?

For the gear cables these are pretty good - outer and inner plus bits:

oo - colours

I get the impression that they are as good as other stuff. Edinburgh Bike Co-Op in my experience has a good nose for good straightforward bits.

I use jagwire on the roadie and have had no issues with them.
On the hybrid(ridgeback)they are the originals, they have started to show signs of rust on the exposed bit, under the top tube, and the rear did freeze during winter commutes, could be time for a change i think.

I make sure I buy stainless steel ones, and put some moisture repellent inside the outers. (WD40 usually). I've tried expensive ones several times over the years but TBH I can't tell the difference from midprice ones. OTOH cheap ones give noticeably poorer braking and cheap gear cables very quickly give different positioning going up and going down the gears.

I use Wilkinson cables on my commuter and Clarke on the best bike. Both work well.

Wilkinson are about a £1 per cable give or take a few pence.
