Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on guides/tutorials on general maintenance and servicing of bikes? Preferably online either written or as a video but I don't mind forking out a few nuggets for a book if it's worth it.

Thanks

There are so many different types of bikes and different approaches from manufacturers that no book can cover everytrhing.

Best bet is to pick it up as you go along - start with keeping your chain clean and measuring it to make sure it doesn't wear out the cassette is number 1.

search Mickle Method in forum search box.

Trek have a pdf file for their bikes that has a general maintenance schedule. I can't upload it unfortunately, but you could search for it on line. Also, youtube have plenty of good videos that you can view showing just about every aspect of bike repair and maintenance. I have also been told that this book 'Zinn and the art of bike maintenance' is a good choice.

I have Zinn's book but I usually search on YouTube for clips. There is a lot of good stuff there.

techdocs.shimano.com has a lot of information too.

+1 for the Zinn books.
Plus You Tube is your friend. You will be able to find everything you need to service a bike.

Park's Big Blue Book of Bicycle Maintenance - it's actually prety small but very neatly written so it doesn't need to be any bigger.

A lot of the stuff is available for feee on Park's web site but a book is well worth having when you've got the grease out. Tis truly excellent.

If you have some more modern bits on your bike, make sure you get the second edition.

I like the Park Tools book, but, strangely, I prefer the Haynes Bike Book by Fred Milson and Guy Armstrong's Road Bike Maintenance book.

YouTube beats them all, though, IMO, for looking stuff up before trying it for yourself, although it's tough to control it on the iPad when your hands are covered in grease and crap. :giggle:

Thanks everyone for the advice! It sounds like there are definitely a couple of note-worthy books out there but the Internet (YouTube in particular) trumps them all!

I will dip my fine filter knowledge net into the sea of YouTube creations and see what I come across.

If you really want some light reading of maintenance porn you could always get Sutherlands book.
