Is it really that bad in the experience of our female contributors? I like to hope nobody I know is quite as thick or insensitive.

So far in my lifetime I've had numerous dodgy comments made whilst walking and running, been hassled for my phone number, been groped (in broad daylight, on a busy London street), had people snuggle up far closer than was strictly necessary on public transport (usually solved by scraping a heel down their shin or "accidentally" treading on their feet), but the only incident I can remember since I've been biking is someone's passenger screaming "nice @rse" into my ear as they hooned past.

I've had a few "keep it up luv" style of comments going up hills etc but in the scheme of things don't feel particularly offended by those...

At work for years we only had a few female part timers, they were treated as we were. Now and again there was a bit of dodgy lingo and jokes that were beyond the knucle but nothing special. The girls handled things in their own way and as one said as long as the lingo etc was not aimed directly at them they accepted it (and now and again they give back as much as they got) and the lads made sure that they never had to ask for help or were picked on by either the boss or incomers. Then two went full time and some one wanted full PC. No pinups, no dodgy lingo etc. Result no peace, no help for any one and the females a lot worse off and discontent right across the floor, as jobs were kept open for maternity leave, school holidays and so on.

Think that's a slightly different discussion to the situation the article is talking about - which is women on bikes being physically and verbally abused as they are out and about in public - so comments and language aimed directly at them, nothing to do with workplace banter or "PC" and everything to do with an individual's right to go about thier daily business without being harassed.
