I had intended going straight to Windows update, but I know it is possible to get infected, just by being connected to the internet!

Don't forget you need a firewall to stop this happening. I'm not up to speed with the latest versions of Windows Firewall; I've always used a non-M$ offering as I've been about longer than it's shipped with Windows! I've been using Comodo for quite a while now; only thing is if you don't know what you're doing you can block legit traffic.
