Having seen a few other stories recently about confrontations with drivers, I thought I'd share this one with you as it surprised the hell out of me.

I was out with my kids in the trailer (me on my cyclocross bike pulling my two boys, charlie 4 and Joe 2), on our way to the park about 6 miles away, when a right cockwomble races past with scant inches to spare and left hooks me. I just managed to miss him and I shouted my obvious distain for his road skills loudly (I think the F word as used). Where upon he screeches to a halt and jumps out all red in the face and fists clenched. My immediate thought was to scarper quickly as with two kids, I really didn't want them around this. Almost immediately his wife gets out of the back seat of his car and slaps him round the face HARD. I'm standing there with my jaw on the floor, just can't believe whats going down in front of me. He starts shouting at her, asking WTF is she doing, to which she reply's he's an idiot for risking children's lives, and how would he feel if his own daughter (in the back of the car) was in the trailer instead of my kids? At this point she orders him back into the car, tail between his legs, and profusely apologies to me.

Can't say I've ever come across someone's partner taking a cyclist side before, but it sure made my day!

Nothing better that seeing a bloke put in his place by the other half in public.

Chapeau wifey:thumbsup:

Compare and contrast with the time that I was riding my bike along the A646 though Todmorden at about 25 mph (slightly downhill with a tailwind!) and 2 young couples in a hot hatchback came screeching out of a supermarket car park and almost sideswiped me.

I didn't shout at them, I didn't stick my fingers up at them, I didn't pull any faces, I merely swerved round their near side, took my right hand off the bars and gestured gently forward at the open road ahead and said "After you!".

Their faces contorted with rage and they started screaming abuse at me and making threatening gestures. I can only think that the fact that I happened to be in the place where they wanted their car to be caused them great anxiety lest the car's paintwork be damaged by hitting me.

Evidently, I should have transported myself into a parallel universe to get out of their way as soon as I heard the screech of their tyres ...

Yet if a man hits a woman it's assault and he's a wife beater.... (Not that i'm encouraging it but still...)

Sounds like a dick though. It's one thing overtaking a left hooking a bike but a trailer that's obviously got kids in it is really daft.

The same applies the otherway but not many people would admit to it, Mr McColgan did; I think it was laughed out of court though.

having been on the receiving end of domestic abuse when i was 25 , yes all 6ft 2 and 18 stone of me, its not a great thing to go through. knowing you dare not risk fighting back lest you be accused of being the abuser. If i am ever on a ride with some of you i will show some of you the scars she left . you can't see the mental scars though nobody sees those

I'm reading this more concerned for their young daughter if that's how they conduct themselves. Clearly they're both violent and with a short fuse.

But yeah, what a bizarre confrontation!

Not cycling related but (quite a few) years ago a similar thing happenned to my ex girlfriend on her way to work. Cannot remember the exact incident but it was something over nothing:

A big man (metaphor) gets out of a car shouting and swearing at her (she was all of 8.5 stone and on her own). Unfortunately he is not alone in his car and he was not driving it either. He was with his girlfriend (presumption).

As he is going through his verbal tirade the lights change, his girlfriend leans over locks his passenger door and drives off. My ex drives round him as well laughing her head off.

Very occassionally Karma happens and even more occassionally you get to witness it.
