I have seen lots of her photoshoots, but, with a bicycle? I am amazed, I may have to revise my opinion of her. 😂

It was something to do with active travel in Northumberland or North Tyneside. Maybe the Whitley Bay to Tynemouth stretch? To be fair she wasn't actually riding it, just standing holding it.

Active travel targets have been missed by miles :-

Add to that the fact that cycling mileage has dropped by 2.8% below the pre-Covid mileage - doesn't look great.

Primary school I used to work at had a very high level of kids walking to school

The one my grand kids go to is the exact opposite

but the reason is not connected to health and government targets

it is purely economical - I taught in a poor area
my grand kids go to a school in a much better off area

so - best course for the government is to make everyone poor and the active travel figures will go up!

( I presume the minister responsible does not consider CycleChat as one of their primary sources of sage advise???)

Active travel is going very well here in Poshshire. Its a carncil priority, apparently.

But not a priority when they decided to recently install a lamp post in the middle of this shared path for cyclists to enjoy.

Apparently its been there a while (it hasnt). Oh, thats alright then.

If it's such a non-problem as the carncil claim then why dont they install them in the middle the road?

Active travel my arse.

What we need is a regional mayor...

Things like that is where the street view is useful - you can view the older versions and see what it was really like a few years ago

What you need is more councillors who “actively travel”, preferably, by bicycle 😊

Similar here but they were hardly secure being 'wheelbenders' tucked out of the way behind the swimming pool out of sight of anyone and were the favoured spot for the smokers.

And that was just the teachers.

“You don’t understand; there are no simple solutions; it’s not black and white; it’s much more complicated than that”.

Last school I taught at the Head was quite keen of kids walking or cycling to school
so she had a secure area set out with a 10foot high fence round it with a decent lock
there was even a metal shed inside it for storing scooters and the like

whatever it took to encourage them to come by some form of travel that wasn;t a car

As I often had my bike in there (the kids knew it was an ebike but never messed with it) I was well known to have a key

so if the "Site Manager" was not around and had forgotten to open it then they often asked me as they knew where I would be

One time they asked and said that one of the "usual suspects" had got fed up waiting and was climbing over the fence
so I dashed round to make sure she was safe
by this time she had got over and was inside

but had scared herself witless and needed to comfort and assurance that she was safe now

especially as I had to go back to my room to get the keys before I could let her out
It was quite funny - she was a nutter but had a sense of humour and I managed to get her laughing about it while I was trying to open the lockr

she never tried that again - not sure about the plan as climbing back over with her bike would have been rather complicated!

As you know, im a parish councillor.

I walk, or occasionally cycle, the 1.5 miles to meetings. All my colleagues, all whom live closer than me, some only 2 or 3 hundred yards away, drive.

They then spend the meetings moaning about the traffic and parking.

Quite.

Nah when I was at school they all smoked in the staff room, in summer if you walked past the open window you'd have sworn there was a bonfire in there or the room was on fire.

When I first started in school as a trainee teacher there was a separate room off the staff room for smoking

it reeked

when I started at that same school as a "proper teacher" the room had been changed to a store room and then became an isolation room

smoking was just not allowed on site at all - kids AND teachers

there were some kids that we knew smoked - but unless we saw them doing it there was little we could do
I had one kid in my class who was know to smoke
He was VERY protective of his anorak - even in summer
I had to be very careful about time when he had to be separated from it and make sure he knew it was safe

because it had his fags and lighter in it

(and probably stuff he had knicked - he had a problem with that which is another story!)
