Can't find the answer on the DVLA site, but does anyone happen to know if it is possible to transfer registration numbers between different classes of vehicles? e.g. from a motorbike to a car.
I am thinking about buying one for a motorbike (either V4 *** or *** VFR), but only if I would eventually be able to transfer it to a car when I give up motorbikes at some point in the future.
I do remember from the distant past that it wasn't possible to transfer plates from the likes of old tractors with very old number formats on them, to cars. No idea what the reasoning was; and I might be mistaken.

I don't know of any rule that says a cherished plate can't be swapped between different classes of vehicles.

Mine is on my motorcycle but I may swap it to a car at some point.

As far as I'm aware the main rule is you can't make your vehicle look younger than it is (ie, your not allowed to put a 61 plate on a vehicle that had a 54 plate or a T reg on an older G reg car etc)

It could be wrong but I don't think Northern Irish plates with the ABC1234 format have a year indicator.

I'll double check my paperwork for you to see if it mentions restrictions.

Yes, done it myself several times, including betwixt bike and car. You can do it all on line now - put it on retention, then transfer it to another vehicle. Took my plate off my pickup (a light commercial) and on to the new car in about 10 minutes on line. Easy and hassle free, so fair play to the DVLA for that.

I have a car with a cherished plate on it which has no MOT and can't transfer it off. It's sorn and I am the keeper so it's "mine", just can't stick it on the new car!

That seems a bit unfair, what happens if you have a very expensive plate on an old banger, have you lost the ability to sell it?

Yep, plate (VRM) actually belongs to the DVLA and they can decide what to do with it...
if you restored the vehicle to mot standards could you then transfer it to another vehicle (even if you had to set up a company to sell it to) then would another reg from the same era be issued to the old vehicle ? you may have two cherished number plates then.
Problem is that my car with my plate on is a 400 BHP methanol injected Impreza which has died quite badly . Needs quite a bit spending on it to get it through a MOT, which I don't want to spend just to retrieve the *** SAW number plate. I'm waiting to win the lottery!
