Last night I came very very close to being hit side on by a fast moving taxi .In fact it did hit my pannier bag. This was by the side of the minster where it joins onto petergate (in york) .The taxi didnt even stop . It was my right of way as I was in a cyclelane (you can tell because theres a bloody bike painted on the road). Its left me feeling a bit spaced out today.
I'd like to see that driver again:angry:

Oh bad luck...they only stop (sometimes) if they actually hit you.....and you are lay on the road/bonnet and can't drive away....

A quick wheelspin will usually dislodge said cyclist from bonnet and on their way!!!

Seriously though - what a shock - I had a car pull out in front of me once and I managed to pull out with her (if you know what I mean) but she still came so close that she brushed my leg - v.scarey!

Defo think we should all be issued cameras as standard!

Lucky escape, and scary. You can be doing everything right and still get clobbered. Cycle lanes offer little protection when drivers don't drive as they should.

But remember what [other] people say - cycling isn't dangerous!

Nasty! If you got any details report it. The driver needs to know how close he came to a serious incident.

TRC,

I do sometime wonder if I should set up my own helmet camera distrubution business, focussed on cyclists using them. I'm sure there is money to be made there!

I didnt manage to get any details as it all happened very fast and he was off again. The crowd on a ghost tour all saw or at least heard as I was swearing in a very colourful way and at volume. The helmet camera sounds like a good idea but first I'd have to get a helmet to attach it to. Right now I'd like to make the guy very very sorry.
I'm still going to have to commute by bike as I dont drive ..that and its quite fun sometimes.

I've often wondered if I set something up would I get business based on my experience with the cameras. I could certainly do with the money. So if someone has the business skills (and some set up money!!) and I have the name and the expertise maybe we could start up a business.

Any takers? ;)

You know Magnatom, I was thinking ages ago why the police dont fund such cameras schemes with a reporting system, maybe even a live feed, wow, we could all be mobile CCTV's!!

Bit of paperwork for us am sure, but it is us cyclist who see more than most on the roads!

Random thought of the day!

and what wiull the police do? FA from my experinece, why would they want to create more work for themselves when they can sit in a warm van holding a cupopa manning/womanning speed camers to catch unsuspecting motorists who do 3 mph above the speed limit in areas that in all reality can be safely driven at well over the limit.

Is this a wind up?

There are only a very small number of hackney carriages in York, something like 80. If it is one and not a minicab it's absurdly easy to report to the licensing officer at York City Council. Unfortunately he's not a very nice chappy so be warned on that front. If it ever happens again, just get the details and write to him .

ouch! I know just where you mean. Taxis and all sorts are always turnignb round there - I'm always on the look out and covering the brakes - if it's not vehicles, it's tourists wandering out without looking...

Do you ride that way regularly? I do:

Arch, I don't usually go that way unless I'm going to visit my mum in holgate (which is just as well) .I live off Burton stone lane so I can bypass town and go to work via stockton lane where there are no tourists but a few cows and sheep which tend not to try and kill you  . I absolutely dispise riding in town because of all the lemmings jumping out in front of you ( and claiming its your fault) or all the psychos in various vehicles...Its all good fun :/

Isnt that the point, that most of the hard work is done by us lot cycling with camera's and forwarding the offending info to them, so they can carry on with the donuts and coffee and forward the info to an administrator for what ever pursual the CPS want to do? I mean, seriously, how many times in a cycle ride do you see incidents that you know would cause harm to a fellow cyclist and theres no police around? Theres way to many bad drivers out there! And if it saves a life, it saves a life!
