I use Bikehike http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php I don't know of any better!
I like bikehike but I often have a problem where it does not show the ordnance survey map on the right in course creator. I do not know if it is just my PC but it makes the site pretty useless for my needs, when it is working it is great though.
Is this is where you receive the message "Sorry This map tile cannot be served at the moment"?
If so I can explain what is happening. OS (Ordnance Survey) released (in truth they were forced to by the Labour government) the OpenSpace project to developers allowing access to their mapping data base a few years back. Unfortunately OS decided to put an access limit on how much usage they allow any one site to have. At the moment any one site can only have access to 65,000 tiles per day. Unfortunately this means that any popular site gets blocked at some time during the day. BikeHike is very very popular so if you wish to use the OS part of their site then tune in in the mornings or even just after midnight.
I developed my own mapping stuff on the back of OS OpenSpace which was primarily for my own hill walking, however it now has its regular users (particularly in Germany ?). It is no where near as popular as the likes of BikeHike however even my site sometimes runs out of tiles late in the evening, i can see so far today there has been used 42,400 of my 65000 daily allowance. Yes thats the message and thanks for explaining the issue. Thanks for the link to your website looks like a decent one![]()
I do love the logic in these mapping sites. I was working on our LEJoG route the other day and Google maps decided the best route from Northwich to Kendal was via Douglas on the Isle of Man!!
