I loth windows, I've been a mac user for about 15 years, my current G4 iMac is on its last legs (macs do give good shelf life to be fair), I will in the next month or so consider one of the new iMacs but it's going to be a close call with a PC i'm afraid, I just don't think that the macs have the edge they had at one time, a carefully looked after PC is just as good, yes there is more 'maintenance' work compared to OSX but I really don't think I can justify the premium now...

If the future involves using your computer as a doorstop, you may well be right.

Linux powers smart TV's, Google Chrome Devices, Virgin Media TiVo boxes, Android mobile phones and the majority of the worlds websites. Your probabably already using Linux and just do not know it.

I've got a Ubuntu disc sitting on the shelf. I was thinking of experimenting with it on the new laptop which as yet has nothing important on it but there are tales flying round that Linux can damage the motherboard on certain makes (Samsung being one, I think). Mine's a Compaq.

I've been a Linux tech for years, and its the first I have ever heard of it.. I can't see how software can damage hard wear especially as the Linux boot loader does not write to the bios or efi.

And? Does t mean its a good platform for day-to-day use does it? Unless you're a developer who can make a user friendly programme its friggin impenetrable. You can keep it.

I'm perfectly capable of doing my day to day work, including during the net, online banking, email, uploading my garmin and many other things with Linux its a great platform for my day to day use.
I however never stated it was at this time a suitable desktop platform for everyone, many people are happy to give up security for ease of use.
My comment was that Linux is the future and anyone who has tracked the rise of the OS or interest in technology knows that overtime
Linux will become easier to use and take the Desktop market the very same way it has for server, cloud, media centres, TV and mobile markets.

I had a PowerBook G4 and the a MacBook Pro but I'm back on generic laptops now - I got increasingly annoyed with paying over the odds for hardware only for it to be used to almost force me to pay for software - you can't use this OS because your laptop is too old, so you can't use this version on iTunes, so you can't use your phone and so on.

I now have a fairly low spec laptop running Lubuntu (lightweight Ubuntu) and it's totally fine. I can boot to Windows if I want, but generally I don't; I only use it for Garmin update software for my satnav.

When I went back to Windows (obviously the laptop came with it, so I gave it a go) it was a bit of a shock, hence moving to Linux. And then when, two years later, I needed to use Windows again, the updates took two days.

Having professionally support M$ for fifteen years I can confirm, mac is the way forward.

Having professionally supported M$ for twentyfive years, I can confirm you are not not doing it right

Apple devices have their place and they certainly have an understandable appeal to the general public. but you really cant tweak the o/s to get stuff running like you can with windows. once you get rid of the bloatware and unnecessary services Windows is actually really nice. I even liked Millennium after a few changes..
Linux is just black magic. you can do amazing things with it.. but you will be burnt as a witch.

I've always used windows (XP). My brother has always used Linux.... but then he bought and installed Windows8 and all he talks about is how great it is.. everyone else seems to think Windows8 is a piece of sh!t.. but because he used to use Linux, he's an expert.
