I have a PC at work which I quite often need to transfer files from and to. This is fine when I am at work as I've just mapped a SAMBA share in my file manager (Dolphin - I'm running Mint KDE) and then it's an easy job to move stuff about.

However, when I'm at home I can't do this. I get around it by using VNC and using the transfer files tool, but it's a bit of a faff, and means I have to adopt a different way of working. I am sure there must be a way I can map a network drive to the harddrive in my office PC, but I can't work out how.

I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone could pass on any tips

In spite of working within IT for 47 years, haven't got a clue! But I do know that it would have been a sackable offence for any DIY attempts at remote access. Too much of a risk of introducing viruses onto the firms network or allowing data leakage and bad media coverage in the press.

But I hope you find a workable solution.

Thanks.

It's my business so I'm pretty safe from being sacked I reckon

What size are the files? If you have a fixed IP address at work just set up a password protected WAMP or whatever with the /htdocs file as the root folder your files are in. Apache will be much more efficient at delivering them than a remote access program.

Or just stop being so tight and buy a laptop. :okay:

Yeah, can't he set that up and just FTP into it?

Nextcloud is better than Google.

Another option if either end has a fixed IP address is a VPN connection and then run samba over. I've used openvpn for that before with good results, but not needed to for a few years.

Thanks for the replies. It does have a static IP for VNC so I shall investigate the suggestions above.

The other thing you could do is just to buy yourself a NAS and set it up with no-ip. If you don't want to buy a NAS then you can easily make one from an old PC using FreeNAS.
