If you undo the cup and cone the cassette will come off.
Watch it doesn't land on your foot.

Well a very dirty, but now clean, 12-27 landed on my foot about 2 hours ago :B)
Having looked at the price of them this tatty bike's got a lot of valuable parts fitted to it.
12-27 used to be my preferred size.
I recommend that you look after it - i.e. replace the chain when the checker tells you. If it wears out, it will probably mean a new wheel.

Unfortunately it's not mine - I'm doing this as a favour for someone. And a new chain will be on later this week.

12-27 remains my "preferred size" but with a 9 speed flavour.
Yes, David, after LEL last year and in preparation for PBP next year it's useful to hear such recommendations - but if you hear the 'chain checker' talking to you, go for a soothing ride on the Raleigh 20 (a project which I hope is near fruition).
