Repairing tyres

At the weekend I rode over a stanley knife blade which cut through my tyre and innertube. The Tyre is quite expensive and has only done 1000 miles, but now has a nice gash in it about an inch long. Can it be repaired in any way?

An inch long gash? I would say bin it. Wouldnt want to risk a blow out at speed.

The other week a tin lid lying in the road did for my tyre which had only done about 300 miles. Could never trust any repair to a deep half inch long gash. Although sickening, safety comes first!

Happens.

Just live with it and buy a new one.

Last time it happened to me it was vandals and I lost 2 Marathon plusses and a saddle. I had nasty thoughts as to what I'd have liked to do with their knives.....

I had the same happen to a limited edition Schwalbe tyre. I have repaired it by sewing using kevlar thread a patch on the inside and then sealing the split with special rubber solution. I am not expecting this to last but is more of an experiment - the stitching is on the side wall coz if it was over the tread area, it would be worn quickly.

It is fitted on the rear as that is lower risk should the tyre go down - I doubt the inner tube will burst, more likely the tyre will cause a lumpy ride.
