First post on here so please be gentle , The brake cable for the rear brake has become dodgy strands of wire or showing and it is looking messy at the rear were it connects to the brake. I have purchased some brake cable just the inner stuff and read up on how to do it but am still a little puzzled. The gear/brake shifters are shimano tiagra st-4400 it looks quite difficult to gain access to the inner part of the shifter, do i need new grip tape as well?, If someone could give me a 'laymans' guide on how to do this I would be extremely gratefull.

OK - you really need new outer cables as well, although you could get away with inners - just don't expect great results.

Undo cable from brake calliper, snip frayed end off - if possible.

Pull brake lever towards bar and feed inner from snipped end until it pops out from the front of the lever - i.e. the gap that you can see when the lever is 'pulled'.

Refitting is the same - just thread through the front of the lever.

Best results are removing the lot, i.e. bar tape, etc.... but if you don't fancy that just feed through.

Try and run some oil on the cable as there may be some gunge on the outers.
