Replace my CRT TV...

Sorry, cannot find Technical Thread, think it’s here now but Mods, please move if in the wrong place.
Anyway, I bought my CRT Sony Wega TV just before flat screens became accessible. The picture (32") is really good. I have it hooked up to a Blu-Ray wireless streamer so I can stream to it quite happily and get all the on-demand from Sky (iplayer, 4od etc etc). So, there’s very little I missing functionally other than the physical aspect. It’s in a corner so I’m not really missing out on the space behind it and I don’t really want a bigger screen, happy with 32” – would maybe get 37”.

I keep going into shops and seeing all these tvs and to be honest, most of them have a poor picture quality in comparison. I know HD would be better, but from what I’ve read, flat screen can’t match the quality of CRT on non-HD which makes up a fair chunk of what I would be watching.

It’s not the money as I’ll happily spend £1K+ on a new TV but don’t want to spend it for what I feel is a downgrade.

What are people’s experiences with this?

As I said, it looks like non-HD is worse on LCD.

Mrs. Admin wouldn't let me buy a large screen TV so I bought a Sony Bravia 32" HD TV at the top-end of the range and haven't had a single problem with it - sound and picture quality are fantastic.

Coupled with our (modified to 1TB) Sky+HD box it makes for ideal viewing in our small-sized living room.

Having used their products for years I'd have no hesitation in recommending Sony AV kit.

I was in John Lewis and most were showng some CGI guff designed to look good. All those that were showing BBC1 news looked a little fuzzy. Some better than others but none as good as my tv.

we have a Sony LCD TV 32" its OK but can get a little pixellated when watching the rugby.

we (Me) are looking at a Samsung 3d one at moment but that is just a looking but not serious

I was advised to buy a Panasonic or a Sony TV when I was looking a few years ago.

Both manufacturers were offering 5 year warranties, but I wanted 42" and wasn't prepared to compromise, so Sony lost out as they didn't make that size, if they had then it would have been a coin toss TBH.

So we ended up with a Panasonic Viera plasma, it's brilliant IME and I'd recommend it to anyone.

My 28in CRT broke just before I left for work, had a moan at tea time and that night 2 people came round both with 25in CRT`s no longer wanted due to buying 32in LCD I put one in each room and used for about 18 months then with the Olympics coming up decided to get a 47in Plasma so gave one away then my sister needed a spare to give kids so she got the other one. TV`s don`t die anymore they just move on so we can have shiny new toys.

Our Sony CRT was dying and we went into JL High Wycomb and they were excellent in terms of service. One thing we found is to get TV's set-up properly AND on the same setings for comparison. Don't watch demos, you need live sport or similar or outdoor stuff reallysee the differences.
We went for a 42" Samsung in the end (with highest 'resolution/refresh rate whatever), best picture in our opinion (from JL's range) PLUS it comes with BBC 1plaer, ITV player 4oD, 5 Player all built in ( Most TVs do BBC - only Samsung do all the others). No regrets, it's amazing, possibly too life-like! Sport in HD is unbelieveable, Moto GP and the Americas cup are astonishing.
Also it interacts with the Samsung phones and laptop we have too.

Would I go back to CRT ... no way.

Im trying to remember how long we've had our Panasonic 42 '' Viera plasma, maybe 6 years...no issues whatsoever and to me, it has a good picture...perhaps the newer ones are even better.

We were in the same position as OP, we had a high end 32 '' CRT, cost £1200 maybe and we were reluctant to get rid, but took the plunge...and never looked back.
Ironically, we gave the CRT away...theyre just not worth anything now. Bloody thing weighed at least 50kg, nearly broke my back shifting it. Up until last year....it was still working well.
