Hi
My Sora FD has broken and I need a replacement. The triple crankset is 32-42-52 with 8 speed on the rear.
The nearest I can find is a Shimano Claris 3 x 8s but it says the max for the large crank is 50. Does anyone have any experience if I am likely to have any issues fitting the Claris or if there is another FD which would be more suitable ?

Most if not all triple FDs (do not get an FD-4403, nib break failure well known) will do the business.
Triple FDs have an inner cage plate with greater area (ftaod).
The cage width narrows slightly as the groupset 'speed' increases. Like chainsets, one speed different is zero problem.
The 'only up to 50t' bit will not affect your ability to fit it and for it to shift perfectly.

Take care to spec the band the right diameter (eg 31.8mm or whatever your seat tube is)(if band on).

When you say broken, it's not siezed is it ?
If it is, there is a dome headed pivot bolt on the mech (rear facing iirc) Undo it a bit (not remove) and get some lube in there, it usually frees up.
If its not siezed, disregard....

Was there ever an 8-speed Sora? The compatibility chart I have says 8-speed was Claris or "2300".

Anyway, I recently replaced the original Sora triple FD with one of these from Amazon. It appears to be genuine (but who knows?) and works perfectly.

Yep, Sora 8 speed on one of my early roadbikes.
Very dependable considering the mileage I put through it, only vice was it was prone to FD pivot seizure in winter, easily rectified.

This thread is about an FD, so the only speed aspect (10sp or less) difference is the width of the cage.
Since you are young and keen to learn, you'll be amazed to know that there has been Dura-ace 9sp (7700), Ultegra 9sp (6500), 105 9sp (5500) and Tiagra 9sp (4400) before the current hierarchy of Sora 9sp. Sora used to be 8sp: when it went to 9sp they brought Claris in to fill the 'ole. (All numbers examples)

I commend this comprehensive article on FD compatibility by Relja Novović
Otherwise (RD):

6, 7, 8 and 9 speeds

Rear shift ratio is 1.7, that is for 1 mm of cable pull/release, RD is moved left/right by 1.7 mm. Shimano calls this 2:1 ratio for marketing reasons.
All these RDs are compatible and any 6 to 9 speed RD will work perfectly with either 6, 7, 8 or 9 speed shifter. Regardless whether it’s a MTB, or road shifter, or RD. They are also compatible with Shimano 10 speed road shifters, except the Tiagra 4700 series.

I was aware that the thread was about the FD but the OP mentioned his bike was 8-speed Sora and I didn't know there was an 8-speed version of Sora. Very little amazes me, except being confused with someone that is young and keen to learn ^_^
