Are you sure it's worn? It's just that chainrings have a much longer life than chains and cassettes and can last for years. And if its a double, unlikely that both have worn out together, so maybe just one needs replacing.

Yes its worn out. The smaller chainring was replaced a while ago and it did have a new chain, but its all gone now and not helped by endless use of WD40 as a lubricant and then not cleaning off the collected grit and soil. The good luck may well be needed. Thanks.
