Replacing Freehubs

Hello.

I've had two rear wheels diagnosed with needing a new freehub so I've been told to "just bin them"...

Well, I didn't bin them as I am a compulsive hoarder.

The wheels are

• A Miche Excite Set which are true and roll nicely which are cone and cup.
• A Cole Rollen Set which are very very light, true and have sealed bearings

I've taken the freehubs off to see if I can tighten them up but they are indeed deaded.

So I decided in my infinite wisdom to look for some replacement freehubs and.... they actually come up cheap...

£12.99 For the 9 speed miche hub

And £35.00 for the Cole Rollen

What do we think guys, try and resurrect the wheels ?? I think its a no brainer for the Miche set.

I would have a crack at fettling them , just for the warm fuzzy glow if you succeed

Just replace the Miche one. Are you sure the Role Rollen is not salvageable? New bearings can be fitted and the pawls are often common with other brands. Can you post a photo, particularly of the rear (pawl) side.

Was the "bin them" advice directed at the wheels or the free hubs? Replace, of course (or refurbish as Yellow Saddle suggests).

I think a lot of shops are 'upselling', why bin a wheel when the freehub has gone they're replaceable for a reason.

I can't get the damn freehub off the MICHE, I thought it was off but when I dragged it out of my collection of dead wheels it was very much attached.

Take off cassette
Remove axle
Stick big* allen key down the throat of the freehub. Turn lefty loosy. Voila.


*Big is a term for anything from 10 to 14mm, depending on brand. Some even use the elusive 11mm.
