Replacing rotor

I have Shimano BR RS 505 disc brakes and the front is making a rubbing sound but not all the way round (when I turn it on the stand). I have loosened the caliper mounting screws, pulled the brake on and retightened the screws, but to no avail. I’m thinking the rotor is warped. I’ve literally never bought a new rotor blade before - are some types better than others? I hate would you recommend?

It's possible its got a slight kink and if you can spot it could possibly straighten it. There are tools available cheaply enough. Are the wheels secured using through axle or QR, if QR try releasing and reseating the wheel in the dropouts. Another thing is check if QR that there not to tight. I've had both things cause the same problem on my CX bike.

It's warped - get it in the stand and watch it as you rotate the wheel, note where it hits the rotor, you can then use a pair of pliers to bend it back to position - I wrap the pliers in a clean microfibre cloth first though. Bend it back slightly further than straight and repeat until it no longer rubs.

Takes about 2 minutes. Common problem with disc brakes - the rotor will warp slightly when it gets really hot, there is a specialised tool (Park Tool DT-2) to bend them back but a pair of pliers will do the job.

Stick with Shimano rotors they’re reliable and pair perfectly with your brakes. Just match the same size (e.g., 160mm) and centerlock or 6-bolt mounting to your current setup. Before buying, try bending the rotor back gently with a rotor truing tool or an adjustable wrench. Often, a slight warp can be fixed.
