I'm convinced by them, and a big fan. You know they're doing stuff when you get angry drivers commenting on your youtube videos.

I wouldn't report that van one myself; they seem to have a generally good attitude to cyclists and did respond positively to your signal. Its probably a slim chance but they may put two and two together and realise it was a cyclist reporting them and their attitude may change.

Based on their responses (or, more usually, no response at all other than that provided by some email auto-responder) I remain entirely unconvinced by them.

It's not an email autoresponder - look at the timings, it's clearly just a standard response sent out after a human has reviewed your report and done something with it.

Clearly some reports get filed in the bin, but they do at least write letters to some drivers from my own experience. I'm quite amused when a driver comes online to complain, and I've had a number of angry whingers.

Point taken.

Interested to know what experience you've had. The only one I've had which resulted in them actually writing to the driver concerned (so they claimed) involved a lengthy correspondence with a RoadSafe officer who clearly had a questionable knowledge of traffic law not to mention a complete lack of understanding of the principles espoused in Cyclecraft. His advice was that, basically, I had no excuse for taking primary position and should be cycling in the gutter. This all from a report with video evidence. So, essentially the same prejudiced opinion as a considerable number of motorists out there - based on what they think cyclists should do to make the motorists' journey easier rather than what we, as cyclists, are actually allowed to do by law to enable our safe passage.

Obviously, a one off but the disturbing thing is that this guy actually works on the RoadSafe team!

Oh, and is paid for out of our rates.......

How long ago was that Tinuts?

I've had a response from roadsafe saying that i should take some footage to the local station as it should be pushed for a prosecution.

That was a year ago (in fact I believe you commented on the video at the time). Prior to that I had actually taken footage of a stupidly close overtake to my local Police Station only for it to be dealt with incompetently. They initially claimed they'd been unable to read the CD on which I'd supplied the video - complete nonsense as I'd tested the same disc on both Mac & PC. They then failed to act within the time limit stipulated for prosecution to be taken. They then came up with a story about the CPS being reluctant to take action as the probability of a successful prosecution was minimal. They did, however, send a letter to the driver (so they claimed) alerting him that a complaint had been made. A real catalog of incompetence and "can't be arsed" mentality.

As a postscript to this, I later received a reply from number10.gov.uk regarding a petition I'd signed requesting that a minimum passing distance be established between motorists and cyclists. The response was that a law is unnecessary as the Highway Code deals with the issue in sufficient detail. Well, my experience (and, no doubt, that of plenty of other cyclists) is that this is complete bollocks. We have a largely disinterested Police force and a ludicrous lack of appropriate legislation.

Would love to know how you get on Gaz but, personally, I remain cynical.

Around that time they had some civvies in. Who as far as i'm aware, are no longer there.

The Roadsafe division is run by the Roads Policing Unit, where all officers have experience riding motorbikes on the roads. The advise i got from there is very different to riding in the middle of the road, more like you should ride like a motorcyclist.

Very interesting, Gaz. Do you have a mole secreted amongst the RoadSafe crew? As I still have the officer's email, I should point out that he referred to himself as
A/Inspector, Roadsafe London and so was not a civilian. Disturbingly, he also said this:

"I have viewed the video footage of this incident and subsequently invited other officers to give an opinion. The concensus was that the man's driving was not unreasonable in the circumstances but his subsequent ranting was."

In the light of the evidence provided by the vid that comment is really quite disturbing. Should you re-visit the vid, I apologise in advance for my ranting - the tosser really did wind me up. I have yet to attain the apparent Zen-like calm exhibited by some other CC video posters when dealing with murderous motons!

Btw, you might like to speculate on where the comment on YouTube by @mobileboxuk actually came from.

Seems pretty obvious to me............
