Reporting scrotes on illegal ebikes

Judging from soshal meeja it seems that dibble have finally noticed how much people despise illegal ebikes and appear to be stepping up efforts to thwart them to milk those sweet, sweet easy PR wins.

While the delivery dickheads on Ali-Express specials are irritating they're rarely more than that - unlike the scrotes on proper e-motorbikes I've observed several times doing well over the speed limit whilst travelling on the wrong side of the road. The last pair were really excelling themselves - dressed all in black with no lights or PPE and only sparse street lighting for illumination.

From the couple of times I've called to report them I've learned that:

- You should call 999 for an immediate response; as advised when I rang 101 and confirmed when at a later date I called 999.
- You want to make it clear that the vehicles in question are more akin to motorbikes than cycles and that they have no ID or registration visible
- The Police will only pursue the scrotes in question if they're wearing PPE, so maybe your memory or eyesight aren't so good when it comes to recounting what they're wearing..

While Police attitudes probably vary from one force to another it certainly seems that round here it's worth giving them a call if you spot these gobshites out and about.

there're huge numbers of them in central london, some commuters, some doing food/drug delivery, some thieves, plus the odd assassin

on a busy street there'll be a regular stream of them

the police do little about them, they can't catch them if they don't slow down and it's too dangerous to stop them as the police are scared they'll get sued/prosecuted if there's injury/death

stopping the sale is the solution, the position that they're legal for use on private land is absurd

GMP have been doing a fair bit, but we've a lot of said 'riders' locally from a few 'hot spots'. Balaclava's etc. Next to impossible to catch where I live as there are loads of bridleways that they use (oh and footpaths). It's bloody frightening when you are riding down the road, and this lot tear past you at 50 mph popping wheelies - I've no protection on the bike that's going to save me should one of them come off. Should they hit the car, I'd can't do bugger all as I have a registration - I suppose I could jump on the wheels to buckle them.

Mind you, someone down my street issuing cloned plates (his car is now on its 4th VRM in as many weeks, all for Hondas of different colours) and they havent been arsed to do anything about him despite me gift wrapping the report (id have had that away as a pre-breakfast appetiser when I was a beat bobby), so I doubt theyll ultimately do much.

This isn't a matter of education. They all know they're breaking the law, hence so many trying to hop it and fail to stop.

Theyll only pursue if the bobby is trained and the control room Inspector authorises the pursuit, so bedt bet is to actually be proactive and out on foot. PCSO's don't have the legal power to stop a vehicle of any kind for motoring offences, only ASB, so are a bit of a waste of space for this.

GMP have posted a few videos where they have taken to 'contact' said bikes, and the lads weren't wearing lids. Good I say.

When I was a kid, dodgy dirt bikes were a thing, but you could hear them a mile off, not with an Sur-Ron ! I am surprised more of them don't die. Motor bikers rely a fair bit on having an 'exhaust' so drivers can hear them.

I strongly disagree here: they are mopeds/small motorbikes that are mostly using cycling infrastructures.
This is not legal, nor right or safe for us cyclists.
Not safe, because they ride inpredictably at high speeds.
On the other thread we would like to see more kids cycling to school on safe infrastructures, yeah, along with your breakfast just eat bloke zooming at 30mph.
Of course, nobody complains, it's only cyclists that are inconvenienced, the population must get their delivery.

It does seem weird
that if a cop car is pursuing a car doing very high speeds
and the car crashes and injures or kills someone

then the papers seem to report the car driver for driving with due car and all that

and the cop is fine

and if the drivers injure themselves then the same applies

but with a bike then it suddenly seems to be the fault of the cop because the rider is more vulnerable
seem that that should be the problem for the rider not the cop

Not at all. Plenty of people do trials, and take non road legal trials motorcycles to and from venues in a van. Nobody has an issue with that and there's always been no shortage of scrotes buzzing round illegally on petrol trials bikes too. What's the difference if it's electric?

I have seen loads of clearly illegal converted e-bikes locally on Gumtree. Some even take a pride in the bikes being able to do 30mph+.

I have reported several of the worst examples to Gumtree making it clear that the bikes are not road legal, in contravention of their own rules about what can be advertised...but none of them have ever been taken off the listings.
