hang on - hasn't the boss done the OP a favour by sitting on it till the confirmation has come through? After all the new job could be a while to come through or even evaporate. A bit of give and take might be prudent as well as polite.

It does sound kind of like that, but it also sounds a bit like 'we're not going to give you a reference'. Some employers don't. They could have been up front about it if that's their policy.

In any case HLaB has an email confirming acceptance and an agreed finish date.

Hopefully the new employer will understand this and things can progress sensibly.

Fingers crossed for you HLaB; try not to let it stress you out.

If you new job is sorted and you have the date of termination from your current job in writing all is joy. ANY attempt to prevent you leaving is a disaster. Ask for a clear explanation in writing of his reasoning for you not going then trot along to your nearest workplace/employment solicitor and ask for compensation. I suspect they will have a field day.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
One of the last things I was able to do before leaving my full time position was to offer myself a part time post - I accepted immediately ^_^

Sorry haven't read all the above but,.....
I suppose it depends on your relationship with your existing boss. If he is a reasonable sort and you get on well try to get him to come round to your point of view. If he is an arse......................just go when you want to.

You might burn your bridges but better that than starting a new job on a bad note by being late to the party.

If indeed there is a party to go to. Remeber, there has been a conditional offer of a job not an unconditional offer of a job. So far there's no confirmation that the job offer is firm.

Update,

Its took a while but I got the new company to issue a formal acceptance of reference and rearranged my start date and my current boss seems happy with that and is now officially processing my resignation. I didn't want to leave on bad terms, as my current employer may have to approve reports by my new employer or may do consultancy work for them.

I left a job in Spain with the intention of returning to Blighty. Sort of left the boss in the lurch a bit. But I didn't mind, as he wasn't a bit trustworthy. But then something turned up (affairs of the heart) and I ended up staying around for another month. Kept bumping into the former boss *embarrassing *

Be very careful to stay on the right side of him. You don't want him sacking you now, do you?

See post #38, the industry I work in is a small world so I didn't want to leave on bad terms.

I know. That's why I suggested you stay on the right side of him. If he still impedes your leaving, punch him in the face. If you preface this punch with the phrase, 'with all due respect', you're golden.

Good.

I last left employment in 1999, it was funny how, they could "replace me tomorrow, no problem", changed to demanding a months notice when I said that I was leaving. From telling my boss I was leaving, to scribbling a resignation note, clearing my desk and really leaving, took about 15 minutes.^_^
