In all seriousness though it really has happened to me, most notably when I've turned up at snooty restaurants with African business visitors. At a poncy gastro pub in the village of Wiswell, near Clitheroe, the landlady looked at my Nigerian visitor and told me she was full, only to be contradicted by her husband who told her: "No we're not! We've this table, here!" I had the same treatment at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester; the restaurant remained almost empty all evening.
