Being told where to sit in a resteraunts really gets my goat to the point that if I can't choose where I sit I don't spend money there. Couple of cases recently.
One lunchtime in Heathrow I fancied eating at the Italian resteraunt for lunch, spotted a table away from the speaker system of endless Musak so I could makes some calls and eat some grub. But oh, no, that's the drinking area and they don't serve food to those tables. I'd have to move to the musak zone.
Last night with 4 hours to kill at Charles de Gaul Teminal 2, me and my colleague wanted drinks, a decent meal and space to work. There are few eateries but Hippopotamaus fitted the bill. Most of the tables were roped off except a small area where a few diners (they were not busy) were coralled there was a 4 person table. but oh no, we were only 2 people and we had to have a 2 person table wtf?? We told them we were going to have an unhealth amount of drinks and 3 course meals and wanted a little space each to work, but no go. So I said it's that table or we walk .... so we did. At the next resteraunt (pretty much the only one left), similar deal table-wise but it was no problem, take our time no worries. 61 Euros later we left happily.

I have loads more occasions where this is the case, hotels too can be just as bad. I can understand if the place is heaving busy, but when virtually empty or with plenty space available I really don't see the problem of letting the person who pays the wages sit where he/she chooses.

Same here - I won't be herded to a table I don't fancy if there's plenty spare where I do want to sit. I'd take my money to another restaurant sans Nazis.

There used to be a Pasty place in Plymouth by the indoor market

They thought nothing of moving you during your meal!

When I go to a restaurant I always ask which tables are available before they have a chance to say... 'this way please sir'

Burger King have always done me proud.
You should try asking to see the wine list, they get all snotty.

If I don't like the table I'm offered in a restaurant I ask for another one, I've always been satisfied. Best thing I find is to ask for somewhere quieter, quietly indicating a large party or family group near by, that way the staff don't think it's their fault for trying to fob you off with the table nearest the till.

in a sense, FF, you've answered your own question. If you don't like the table, go elsewhere. Then again.........if the tables have been laid out in such a way that some are clearly crap - perhaps that says something about the management. And if the manager of Gastro in Venn Street is reading this.........no, we won't be going back.

The one thing you may not work out in advance is the state of the toilets. I'm a fan of MaccyD's toilets. And if Jean-Christophe Novelli is reading this.........I'd rather piss on the lamppost outside than take my chances in anything you run.

What is it with trying to herd everyone onto tables next to each other?
I'd sooner sit a few tables away from other people, not right next to them, so close I could dip my poppadoms in their chutney!!

Well that's true enough, but the unspoken question is why do restaurant staff think their owners would not like them to take money from customers? More than that, create ill will?

If you get paid £6.19 per hour as a waiter/ waitress, and get pissed on by your boss, I imagine you are not particularly motivated. My daughter is doing it now. She is quite surprised how some parties of punters who are entirely civil to each other treat her like dirt. That's not a dig at people who want a pleasant seat, |BTW, just an observation by an eighteen year old girl.

We used to need a table for eight, it flummoxes most staff, so I got pretty good at making suggestions - such as, we could have those two tables there, or maybe if you got me an extra chair?
Now I usually ask for a particular table - can we sit near the window/in a booth/away from the door please? Before they shunt us off to the back wall.
In fairness to the staff they are probably trying to seat people in the most manageable positions for them to actually be able to serve efficiently.
