Hi been after a new road bike but finances meant a long wait however our local charity store came up with the goods ...

A Sun Solo 10 speed for £60

Rides well, tho' only managed a quick whizz around the steading

And only weighs 5 lbs more than my wifes Defy 2

not sure of the year but the gear levers are resistance types on the down tube

And it has 2 little lugs for the (long) pump

Still a bargain and we'll see how it gets me around the cycle for Scotland

i still prefer steel framed bikes .

no reason why it wont do years of service if looked after

I had a Sun racing (as they were known then) bike when I was a kid, a lovely bright yellow colour it was, got it when I went to secondary school, bought for me from TG Halls in Gloucester.

Rode my old Dawes last night... the chain was jammed before I set off and then came off a few times.

Got home and asked if anyone had knocked it in the garage... Mrs A_T sheepishly confirmed that it had 'fallen over'...'a couple of times'...and 'made a funny noise' when she moved it.

Me too. Went everywhere on the thing, including school. I even had a proper saddlebag and one of those speedometers with a little wheel that ran on the front tyre.

Oh, and 'Ever Ready' lights. Which I thought were pretty crap even back then.

Look after it and keep it in good condition and you'll do alright on it. When I first started doing club rides I had a hand painted 10 speed of dubious parentage that I brought second hand for not a lot. For two years I did all day touring club rides every other Sunday on it, my mates used to call it Dave's iron horse, it weighed a ton, but didn't let me down.

I just weighed it for Packrat. It weighs 27lbs dead. My Defy is 20.2

We still haven't taken it out for a good ride yet. The real world keeps getting in the way of cycling this week. Have a ride planned tomorrow and a 30 miler planned for Monday afternoon.
