Whereas I thought it was just as silly as the comment about Nineteen Eighty-Four not being worth reading because 'nothing happens'... there's a big difference between personal preferences, making blanket judgments and just not getting it.

From when I was quite young, Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy is still as lovely, emotionally rich and mysterious (for 'made up garbage' of course... )

Not sure how you can say that voicing a personal opinion is silly. You're entitled to feel differently, of course, but it doesn't make mine or Paul's wrong

I'm happy for you to enjoy fairy tales science fiction. Each to his own, eh?

I checked back and couldn't see anywhere Paul had generalised or been prescriptive unless holding an opposite POV is no longer tolerated.

Stig of the Dump...you know, i can't even remember if it was just a simple story without any social comment, or had some sub text in there, i must try it again. loved it as a kid.

1984 and Animal Farm were some of my all time favourites, revisited once at least, maybe twice. Funnily enough, i hated Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Burmese days etc...just didnt do it for me. The clergymans daughter was quite good, but i cant remember the plot now. May try that one again.
