Its an affiliate link. The site makes a little bit of money when someone clicks on it.

Yeah, advertising. Tbh it's a much less invasive way of keeping the site financially afloat than the horrible banner ads etc that certain ad blockers might do an excellent job of removing

Just wondering if it's within the ability of mere mortals to remove the link by editing the post:

Ribble

Actually, seems that something (perhaps my ad blocker) is also preventing the generation of affiliate links - which is nice

So it is - this didn't happen immediately after I'd posted so I suspect it's applied retrospectively after the post... maybe after a certain time of when the page is reloaded..

EDIT: just tried it again and it remained non-linked after several page refreshes, so I imagine something's scanning the pages periodically and adding the links.

If it really irritates you, you could always intentionally mis-spell it

Second one's certainly appropriate as I find said business quite offensive..

Should you be telling us how to circumvent the site's advertising? Don't these ill-gotten gains keep the mod cupboard stocked with biscuits?

You can tag/mention someone, then someone can quote that post and they don't get tagged/mentioned a second time, which would result in another alert being given.

Lol no, no gains for the Mods team, just Shaun, the site's owner, getting some pennies to pay for his running costs.
What I suggested is common knowledge on CC, lots of members do not like to support some companies, misspelling their names is the way not to get them tagged.

I don't object to this but was unaware of it. I have often noticed how Ribble turns to a link but only clicked one a couple of days ago.

My main concern was it might appear I, personally, was trying to advertise a company. I'm no great fan of Ribble but I'm happy the site earns some cash.

You've never seen "Pages may contain affiliate links"!

I know, I was just tweaking your tail

I've moderated forums in the past and know it to be an often thankless task; although made immeasurably more bearable when members are decent.. and I think we have a good bunch on here
