After Richard Ballantine died, I thought I would get a copy of the book for old time's sake. I wish I hadn't. I got to this page, and then I couldn't get any further.

I have all of the versions of his book, and the "coffee table" versions were a victim of the fashion of the times

I have a 1982 edition, and it is illustrated by Victorian Era etchings and ephemera, mainly.

Same for the 1983 edition which I've got.
This tatty much-thumbed edition, complete with oily fingerprints, has a special place on my bookshelf, and if there was a 'book that changed me', this was it - it taught me I had a right to be on the road and inspired me to try all sorts of repairs that I mostly botched in those days.

I must have missed Richard's death last year, but respect to the guy.

Sad it was. His folks were great publishers, and contributed a great deal to the general knowledge esp. as regards WWII.
