is dire!!!

Been using cheapo MTB to ride to work thru the snow, cos its gots knobbly tires, and I love the snowy bits but riding on the main roads is 'orrible. And its got no mudguards on! And I had to dig it out of the snow on Tuesday morning to use it. And I had to fit some lights on it!

Normally on Planet X in summer or winter bike in winter (obviously). Wish I hadnt got rid of me old cross bikes, they would have been just right.

Whinge over. Bye.....

Would a cross bike do well on and off the snow in this weather then?

Yeah, rode plenty of cross races in the snow way back when, and no problems in the snow, and tires arent as chunky so better on the road as well.

Using my MTB at present - it takes twice as long as I'm avoiding the roads as much as possible (yes pavement cycling as well as trails - hardly any peds anyway).. When on the road, due to 'low pressure in the tyres' and studs, I'm only doing maybe 14 mph on clear road....

Makes a change though....

Thanks for that. I've been off my bike since a little before Christmas and getting really fed up with it so currently trying to weigh up the options on winter commuting.

I'd love to ride my MTB to work, but ironically not enough snow! Could use it to get out of my estate, but then it would be dirty back for me. So it's still the old MTB-cum-hybrid effort (with guards), whilst the shiny new bike sits in the garage unused since Dec 24th.

On my MTB since the snow started which has been brilliant as there would have been no way the Hybrid would have stayed topside up without a tyre change of some sort.
Off tomorrow for a snow day with the kids (why should they have all the fun ! )

Got to be better than nothing.Or better than falling ar5e over Bawlocks.

Sounds like me, estate (housing estate not country estate;)) covered in snow, main roads are mucky slush so I get covered in road grot. Am going to get some of those clip on mudguards tonight though.

Definitely better than nothing, its impossible to get any serious road miles in, had to resort to MTB on weekend training ride in snowy tracks. Good fun though.

I've been using a cheapo mountain bike myself I won on eBay, but the back wheel on my road bike is in need of attention/replacing (thieves been at it, but has a built in lock), and I'm doing up my new flat, so that can wait a couple of months, so I'd be using it now regardless of the weather. The tyres aren't knobbly, but they're coping fine, other than the almost fall the other day on a patch of ice (just corrected the bike at the last minute!)! Fitted all the old bike lights on it from my road bike.

MTB for me this week and I've enjoy the change. Knobblies have worked a treat and taking the canal route to work has been fun. Made the mistake of coming home on the road tonight and the lack of ice made the tyres really drag - was hard work! No guards but back remained dry and clean.....

I love riding in on the MTB - gives me the option of taking tracks, old railway lines, fields etc as well as coping with roads that would embarass a Baghdadi. Now got studded tyres, so will be going in tomorrow (which is shaping up to be a bit parky).
