Have you considered flights from somewhere like Manchester or Liverpool you might find them cheaper than the train .
I still have plenty of time so I will look at all the options and then make a decision. My wife is staying in Barnstaple till next week end so she will research from her end also.^_^

Seems like a bit of a detour from Barnstaple in Devon (?) to save a fiver!

That's a bank holiday weekend, so check for engineering works or you may find yourself on a coach after all!

Which will probably take you to Luton or Stansted or Southend  and a £20+ train journey from Victoria. If lucky, you might find something to City

I can't see a return flight being less than £50 as some posters have suggested you can get a ticket for

Be more environmentally friendly driving than flying too!

IME it is often possible to find a lower fare by travelling on an earlier or later train, the redspottedhanky website helps you select a trip, but buy the ticket from the train company website.

Four of us are planning to travel to London in August for two days. Checked prices just now but as I can't booked more than 4 months in advance, I put in May 2 and back May 3rd from Barnstaple to Victoria. Guess how much...............? £110 each!!!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous !!!
Other have pointed out the actual fares, but the 2nd May is a bank holiday, which may affect the release of, and relative demand for, the cheapest tickets. Unless you're travelling on the August Bank Holiday, I'd pick a more ordinary day for comparison.

Didn't realise it was a bank holiday. We are traveling on August 1st but too far away for a price so I just picked a date at random to give me an idea. Thanks for pointing it out.

I've just found a split ticketing website http://www.splitticketing.co.uk/.
Not used it as yet so don't know how well it works.

Did try with a journey to Leeds tomorrow, but made no difference as it just gave the direct train.

edit: Just tried it with a regular journey to Manchester Airport and it came up with a £30 saving. Very restricted on which trains, but..
