How do you know if you have the right of way at roundabout ie that a car has to leave you go first instead of you the cyclist having to leave them go before you ?

I believe the general rule is to give way to the right.
So if a car is to the left of you, they should be letting you go.

Give way to anyone already on the roundabout. Generally this means traffic coming from your right, but during congested periods where traffic is slow or at a standstill this could mean someone directly in front of you or even stationary on the r'bout to your left.

As a practical matter there isn't really such a thing as 'right of way' - we should be giving way to any vehicle big enough to hurt us.

Oh and for the love of god take a roundabout with a certain amount of confidence. Twice in the last week I've seen nervous cyclists on main roundabouts almost coming to a stop as they are unsure if cars are going to give way to them. In my opinion this is pretty dangerous as it leaves everyone in no man's land on what is about to happen.

That doesn't mean don't be aware of cars that might not notice you though!

Sorry for cross posting, but Maylian, do you mean don't do roundabouts like this?

I have a major roundabout near me (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=rh...=Y_FeklwHlcKI9PgQypFPng&cbp=12,344.99,,0,7.42) and i am forced to take it fast to avoid any danger to myself.
I am always in the outside lane to take the third exit. I have to get my speed up to about 22mph (fastest I can go with the sharpness of the bend) and then make sure I am very aware of any cars behind me because my exit (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=rh...=FKkEq4P62aE8kO6pSm8g2g&cbp=12,98.92,,0,11.76) is very wide and people like to undertake (even though they have been behind me right the way around the roundabout and know that I will take this exit).

Just be safe and give way to traffic on your right.

I cycle most like I'd drive them.. except
1. some stupid busy ones, i'll wait on the left for quiet traffic, then enter like a car.
2. I'll ignore the insane 'cycle lanes with stop' crap that some clowns have put in, they just make it difficult for the drivers/cyclists.. ( I have waited, ONCE, because the vehicle joining was a left hand drive cleaning thing and he couldnt see me, so I just waited.)
3. a couple of roundabouts, i'll take a ped crossing in heavy traffic because of traffic levels, speed of traffic.

I witnessed a cyclist giving a load of abuse to a car driver this morning. The driver's misdemeanour was not ceding her perfectly legitimate priority (she was approaching from the right) to the cyclist thereby making the cyclist slow down before entering the roundabout. Don't get me wrong, I'm at the front of the queue for abusing motorists that do stuff wrong but I don't think we should be berating the ones that are driving perfectly sensibly.
