I'm not undermining your answer to the OP, but...

The only Trust involved is trusting that they are going to try to kill me.
If you really believed that you wouldn't cycle on the roads at all. At least, if you really believed that and you were more than 20% sane.

No argument then.

In the context riding/driving, a right of way is given by someone else. If they decide to just go for it, you have to have planned that they will do just that and be prepared to slow or stop.
Priority is similar. If an oncoming driver decides to pass a vehicle on their side of the road, forcing you to stop, you should have had priority and the right of way, but they decided not to give way. Arrogance, ignorance, impatience, incompetence or just plain bad manners. Unfortunately, there is too much of all of these and not enough common sense! But you don't need that to use the highway, be you pedestrian, driver or rider!

Not at all...

Next time you are on the road, count how many times that you have trusted another road user to behave properly

Very simple really

The whole interaction between any two road users is based on trust.

When you are driving / cycling along a road and there is a junction, you simply assume that the driver on the other side will recognise your priority and act accordingly

As you approach a junction , you assume that the other road user will again recognise your priority and let you pass before pulling out

It is the way it works
The whole interaction between any two road users is based on assumption.

When you are driving / cycling along a road and there is a junction, you simply assume that the driver on the other side is an idiot and act accordingly

As you approach a junction , you assume that the other road user will pull out on you.

It is the way it really works. Kept me safe.

Right of way doesn't exist so it can't be that?
Yes it does. I wouldn't be able to go out of my front door if it didn't - "the legal right, established by usage or grant, to pass along a specific route through grounds or property belonging to another"

We all have different levels of experience and skills, as well as different levels of intuition

Watching where the vehicles wheels are positioned rather than where the indicators are telling you, listening to engine sounds and a plethora of other informationthat helps you "read" the traffic and make decisions.

This is one I have posted before.

I still can't tell whether it was as sixth sense, but lights were changing to red and I "knew" that this vehicle was going too fast, and pulled into the slip lane out of their way....

I take the simple approach that I never have the " right of way", its surprising how many motorists realise I am not intending to take the " right of way" and wave me on.

I slow down if there's a car waiting and give them an evil look and shake of the head  if the road is clear in front
