I cycle over the top part of this road every day to go up Horse Guards Rd and as someone said before, there are no road markings or lights so there's no obligation for traffic to stop for waiting pedestrians. Obviously, if someone is already in the road, then you let them cross safely but the ped is also obliged to ensure they can cross safely before stepping out.

I think these are just focal points of the road for peds to cross and the raised aspect of it makes it a) easier for people with pushchairs or using wheelchairs to cross b) makes the traffic slow down a bit at that point.

I've never had a problem on Birdcage Walk but that bit between Buck and Trafalgar Square - is it called the Mall? - is a gently anarchic pedestrian slalom. You'd lose points and incur a time penalty for hitting one.

Yeh, it's the Mall and that's another bit of my route to and from work every day. The amount of people that cross right between the 2 pedestrian controlled crossings either side of the junction for Horse Guards is ridiculous. It might be argued that they can cross where they like and why should they walk 50 yds to the either crossing but 99% of the time, they are going to have to pass by either crossing unless they intend walking down the centre of Horse Guards so they're causing vehicles to stop and putting themselves in harms' way for absolutely no reason.

No wonder there are ambulance crews parked there most evenings ^_^

Nearly fell off my (Boris) bike there a few weeks ago, when a cyclist let off an Airzound at pedestrians on one of those. It got the pedestrians out of the way, him a load of abuse, probably justified, and didn't do the reputation of cyclists much good.

The road isn't very long and the sensible action is surely to just go slowly and show a bit of courtesy and patience for everyone else.

They have them on the road through Hyde Park as well, and because just about everyone else treated them like zebras, I assumed they basically were zebras.
