Real shame. Grew up with Drop Dead Fred and Bottom, wonderful, properly funny man.

Sad, very sad indeed.

He had a serious ATV accident a few years ago, IIRC, and he managed to pull through that. I suppose he was on borrowed time.

One of my favourite comedians. I was another one who followed him since Kevin Turvey.

The world is a lot less funny now.

This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader. And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"

As a student when The Young Ones was running, I remember it being the one "don't miss it" show on TV at the time. As a Brummie, personally I preferred his investigative reporter character from Redditch, Kevin Turvey. Still chuckle now to think of his reportage on fishing in "Kevin Turvey: The Man behind The Green Door" (the list of "crap fish" etc). I might have grown up since those days, but they were a classic of their time - as was his Alan B'Stard character in The New Statesman. R.I.P. Rik.
