Rim has split - what are my options?

Got home tonight, left the road bike in the garage - wife comes in shortly after to tell me she heard a loud bang from the garage. Turns out the rim on my front wheel has split.

I've never had this before and never really messed around with wheels before. I've had a guess as to what my options are. Am I correct, are there others and what are the positives/negatives?

Note - the bike is used for a mixture of commutes and weekend rides. I average about 150 miles a week. The wheels are Shimano RS500 (IIRC), with Tiagra hubs. The most important is that they are robust enough. I don't want to spend the earth.

1. New wheelset? Off the shellf of built. Built by whom? (I'm in Manchester)
2. New front rim and get a wheel builder to build (I'm not doing it myself). Should I get the same rims or get a different set?
3. New front and rear wheel rim (likelihood is that rear one will go soon) and get wheelbuilder to build.
4. Other?

I'd like to get this sorted reasonably quickly as I'm stuck with a hybrid.

Cheers

You can get the new version of those (501's) for £90 the pair, probably cheaper if you shop around.
Can't imagine it would be worth a re-build?

How many miles did you get from it?

Yeah - I guess that is the no brainer.

About 7.5 - 8k miles at a guess. Is that normal, pap or what?

I'd replace the wheels. Had it been 32 hole Open Pro or something, theye're easy to get hold of. Spare rimes for factory wheels with not many spokes are thin on the ground.
CRC have them at £89 the pair. I've not checked Ribble...

My RS10 had done around that mileage, the rim was very worn so replaced recently before the inevitable failure.
Went for the RS20's when they were on offer, rear one will be put on when needed.

Ask fossy about rim blowouts

Ermmm - I *think* so. The plastic sort, so I'd order some Velox as well...

EDIT - the Rose ad says they come with rim tape.

I'm the expert at splitting rims done two in last 12 months.

Option might be hand built for commuting then you can replace or get replaced the rims as they wear. Would also recommend cartridge bearing hubs as they are cheap to repair.

Wheel builder, wills wheels in Stockport, rick green handforth.

Blew my CXP33's last summer, 20 odd mph round a roundabout. bang. Wheel on rim. Wrecked tyre also. Blew 1/4 of the rim wall off the rim. This last one has been a crack but on old rims i put on last summer. Will order new cxp33's on return from holiday and rebuild. A rebuild takes about 2 nights a wheel to do without rushing it.
