I'm looking at a Orange Crush S as my next upgrade although I'm tempted by a Nukeproof scout. The Orange has Alex rims which is putting me off slightly as I've always considered them budget entry level. Are they as bad as I think or should I just go with it and upgrade in the future?

I actually think the same as you,in that alex rims are an afterthought to trying to put other good components on a bike.
So they sacrifice something else,in this case the wheelset.
The Scout will come with own brand wheels and funnily enough I have NP Generator AM wheels.
Not that I'm bias in any way

It's usually where the 'budget' cuts are. See them as a winter set and save up for some better wheels.

My Boardman FS Pro has lower end Mavic rims but they are OK for now.

Ended up going for the Nukeproof Scout Comp in the end, seem to get a bit more for your money and hopefully I won't need to buy a second set of wheels.
