Very sad, 85 is not a bad innings though.

I remember buying one of his albums when I was quite young and the family bought our first record player. The track I remember was "Samantha".
Rest in peace.

I knew the chap that gave Bilk (for that is what he called him) his first clarinet. John had a clarinet that he could not play and Bilk had a trumpet that he didn't care for so they swapped. John didn't become a great trumpeter.

Both my children started the clarinet when they went to school... I promised them both real money if they could learn to play Stranger on the Shore like him.... sadly they never took to music from being small, despite Mrs A_T's piano skills, but then I'm not surprised with the defective music genes they have inherited.

Great fun, respectable musician, and a drinking mate of my dad's in Bristol in the 1950s!

Anyone else remember him at The King and Queen in Brighton in the 1980s?

Sad that he's gone.
