Rather than idolising him I think they more joke about the laughable persona he has of being super tough. Of course it is drawing attention to him but the jokes are completely over the top and are more about the persona than the person.

For example… when God said let there be light… Chuck Norris said - say please.

But yes, I suspect he was actually a bit of a nob.

I thought it was impolite to speak ill of the dead? If you can’t say something respectful, say nothing.
Not only the dead:

  1. I will develop myself to the maximum of my potential in all ways.
  2. I will forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements.
  3. I will continually work at developing love, happiness and loyalty in my family.
  4. I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile.
  5. If I have nothing good to say about a person, I will say nothing.
  6. I will always be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
  7. I will maintain an attitude of open-mindedness.
  8. I will maintain respect for those in authority and demonstrate this respect at all times.
  9. I will always remain loyal to my God, my country, family and my friends.
  10. I will remain highly goal-oriented throughout my life because that positive attitude helps my family, my country and myself.
Judging on that picture linked here, some seem to possess some hatred, giving it a dozen number of reasons, with none of them supported / explained.
Norris' played a "Strong Good" character, just like John Wayne and other such role-specific actors.
Outside play / real life, what did he do wrong / who did he hurt?
He was hired and liked by numerous, for role he played, and for the sport he promoted.
What remains as explanation: political side - worlds Divider of People - the battle between those that pay, and those that get.

In many ways he wasn't perfect, and held strong views about many things that may seem rather extreme in the UK. However, from wiki :

"In India, Norris supported the Vijay Amritraj Foundation, which aims to help victims of disease, tragedy and circumstance. Through his donations, he helped the foundation support Paediatric HIV/AIDS homes in Delhi, a blind school in Karnataka, and a mission that cares for HIV/AIDS-infected adults, as well as mentally ill patients in Cochin.[220]"

So, maybe a nob, but not a complete nob

I believe he also thoroughly enjoyed the Chuck Norris jokes, & positively encouraged them

I remember the "Chuck Norris Facts" thread from Something Awful on internet dayes of yore. Started off being about Vin Diesel and then morphed into Chuck.

Solid B movie territory kind of guy.

I discovered he lived about 80 miles north of me and I have ridden a 200K and 300K through his neck of the woods often. Very rural and a bit hilly. Navasota is not much of a town though.
