The Banana Boat song is iconic. Way back in the sixties it was a perennial favourite on Family Favourites on the BBC on Saturdays. Great song.
He had a good innings.

He bankrolled numerous 1960s initiatives to bring civil rights to Black Americans; campaigned against poverty, apartheid and Aids in Africa; and supported leftwing political figures such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.

Sad to hear that

We saw a film of his only recently at our local arts cinema. Buck and the Preacher. Sydney Poitier plays said Buck , and directs, with Belafonte as the dodgy charlatan "Preacher" of the title. Belafonte rather steals the show

He's also in Carmen Jones, a retelling of Carmen (same music and plot) but with a boxer rather than bullfighter. Bizarrely they dubbed another singer over Belafonte, given he's a pretty good singer in his own right.
