Sadly, risk analyst John Adams has died aged 85, an obituary written by his wife is in the Guardian.

Few are aware of Adams or his work, but I read his book Risk after it was recommended for further reading at the end of an article on risk in New Scientist about 17 rears ago. It all seemed such common sense to me once it was all spelt out in black & white, yet it still remains contentious for reasons that completely baffle me.

I hope there are enough others to keep his work alive, because it's life changing for those open minded enough to take on board what he's saying, but sadly too few are, including Parliament. It can be an uphill struggle trying to compete with the question begging of safety campaigners at times.

"he was often interviewed by BBC Radio"

I never heard any of those, I wish I had.

"He posited the view that everyone has an individual “risk thermostat”, which can frustrate the imposition of safety measures by reasserting the level of risk that an individual was originally comfortable with.

This explains, for example, why motorists drive faster while wearing seatbelts. "

I wonder how Guardian readers will react to that.
