I feel like I could... TAKE ON THE WORLD!!
Showing my ignorance I had no idea that he was born in Germany and fled here to escape the Nazis. Its also really sad to hear how ill he was at the end

Fawlty towers and his role in it never fails to make me and Im sure lots of others laugh and smile, I loved Manuel.

How sad that he lost his memory to dementia. He was a very interesting man who made some wonderful TV and radio programmes about his childhood experiences fleeing from Germany and being a foreign immigrant here. I think it's a great pity that he's mainly remembered for Manuel, but that's probably because I never liked Fawlty Towers, or John Cleese who I felt was barely acting at all in it.
You are right, he was a very erudite and dignified man with more strings to his bow, but I think it is fair to say that nothing else gave his name the status of Fawlty Towers & without such a well known and instantly classic role on his palmares, he may well not have had the opportunities nor platform he did for the thought provoking side to his output.

RIP Andrew Sachs.

Sad news. 2016 has been full of it, especially people from my childhood. It's a sign I'm getting old!

and from a paper that supported Hitler round about the time the Sachs family fled from Nazi persecution. It really is a contemptable rag
