Martin Birch, producer of Deep Purple's Made in Japan and Iron Maiden's Live after Death, among other masterpieces, has died.

Sad news.

The surprising thing to me is that he played such a huge part in the history of metal and hard rock, and he did all that in a relatively short career, as he retired at 44.
